JOHN GREEN – MARY VICKERS – MARY ANNIE ILES The exact date of John Green’s birth is not known, however he was baptised on the 7th June 1816 at Stickford, Lincolnshire, England. John was born to parents George Green and Ann (nee Keevers) who had a family of four including John. Stickford is a very small village situated about 12 kilometres north of Boston, Lincolnshire, on the central east coast of England. The area around Stickford was mainly used for farming and it appears John came from a string of farm labouring ancestors. John himself was a farm labourer and horse groom. By 1841, transportation to Australia had mainly ceased and the emphasis was on attracting free settlers to the colony. The glowing reports and promises of a wonderful new life in Australia, against the backdrop of a futureless existence in the homeland, would have been enough for John to make the decision to try his luck in the great southern land. Mary Vickers worked as a house servant in the Alford area and it was probably here that she met John Green who was also working in this district before they migrated to Australia. This is based on the papers drawn up for their emigration and referee’s for the character of John Green, are all signed by people from Alford. Samuel Stephenson of Alford certified to his character, as his employer, which leads to the belief that he had worked there for some time at least. Householders certifying his character, John Rawdon, William Hornby and Frank Dickinson all came from Alford. The papers are also signed by the Vicar of Alford, Rev. E. Dawson and the Parish Clerk, William Hill. Mary was born c 1825 to parents John Vickers and Jane (nee Bell), who had married on 31st May 1819. John Vickers was born in Maplethorpe, Lincolnshire and Jane Bell in Aly. John & Mary married in St Nicholas Church in Liverpool, on 8th March 1844, seven days before they sailed for Australia. The witnesses were James William Powdrill and his wife Hannah. John & Mary stated their residence was George St Liverpool. Theysailed from Liverpool on the 15th March 1844 aboard the “Briton”, a barque weighing 776 tons, under the command of Captain Alexander Hall and carrying 269 passengers. On board the ship were James & Hannah Powdrill, the witnesses at their marriage. The “Briton” entered Sydney Harbour on 26th June 1844. Mary Green nee Vickers gave birth to 6 children, 4 of whom survived, before she died on 17th November 1854. She is buried in St Luke’s C of E Cemetery at Brownsville (near Dapto). John married again to Mary Annie Iles on 27th February 1855 at St Luke’s Church of England at Brownsville. Mary Annie Iles was born in Thornbury, Gloucestershire, England in 1831 to parents Daniel & Mary Iles, and was the eldest child of a family of five. Mary’s father Daniel worked as a Master Ropemaker and the family lived in St Marys St, Thornbury. At the time of the 1851 census, a few doors away was a Coal Seller, Benjamin English, and it was his daughter Sarah English who would accompany Mary Iles when she made the journey to Australia aboard the “Busorah Merchant” which sailed from Plymouth in January 1853. The “Busorah Merchant” was a ship weighing 533 tons, carrying 293 bounty immigrants, more than half of which were young single females. The ships master’s name was Blyth. They arrived in Sydney on 19th March 1853. John and Mary Annie Green had a family of 12 children. John Green died on 13th March 1889 at Tongarra, at the base of the Maquarie Pass, on the farm he had established in the 1860’s. He is buried in the cemetery at All Saints Church of England at Albion Park. Mary Annie Green died on the 30th August 1903 at Shepherd St, Redfern at the home of her eldest daughter Harriet and son-in-law Frederick Robins. She is buried in an unmarked grave beside those of Harriet & Fred Robins at Rookwood cemetery in Sydney.
