William's marriage to Mary is reg. at St John's C of E, Parramatta # V179010 147A/1790 & V1790111 3A/1790 Hubbard, William to Goulding, Mary. His death is reg. # V1843205 27B/1843 Hubberd, William - Age 67. William Hubbard born c 1768, Parish of St Olave within the Borough of Southwark in the county of Surrey, England was committed along with William Boggis for theft of a sheet and charged at Southwark, Surrey on 3rd February 1783. On 19th February they were sentenced to be publicly whipped but appear to have been charged with a more serious offence (??) and were given the outdated sentence of transportation to America for seven years. From the New Goal at Southwark he was sent to the Censor hulk on 8th April 1785, aged17 years. His occupation was given as a plaistarer (sic). William was transferred from the Censor hulk to the Justitia hulk and on 24th February 1787 was ordered to Portsmouth for embarkation aboard the Scarborough, as was William Boggis. The Scarborough was one of the 11 ships making up the First Fleet, which set sail on Sunday 13th May 1787. It was a 420 ton vessel, carrying 208 male convicts to the new penal settlement to be established at Botany Bay. The ships master was John Marshall. They arrived at Port Jackson on 26th January 1788. Confusion occurs as there were two William Hubbards as convicts aboard the Scarborough, the other had been convicted at the Old Bailey. However the Old Bailey – William Hubbard had left the colony by 1791. In 1789 William was a member of the night watch at Port Jackson. On 19th December 1790, he married Mary Goulding aka Atkinson at Rosehill. They were settled on a 50 acre grant at The Ponds on 18th July 1791. By mid 1802, William & Mary were renting 100 acres in the Northern Boundary district with 40 acres cleared, six of which were sown in wheat and 18 ready for planting maize. He owned two hogs, held six bushels of wheat and 15 of maize and supported a wife, three children and one free servant. He was also a private in the Parramatta Loyal Association. By 1806 he held 70 acres at Mulgrave Place on the Hawkesbury, granted to him in 1803, with 15 acres in grain, almost 50 acres in pasture, five fallow and a ¼ acre of garden and he owned three hogs. William & Mary and four children were off government stores. In 1806, Mary was recorded with four natural children, one son and three daughters. In 1816 William Hubbard contributed to the Waterloo Fund and in May 1820 he served as a constable and was still serving as such in 1825. Mary had died 4th September 1820 and was buried on 7th September 1820 which was recorded at St Phillip’s C of E, Sydney. By the 1828 census, William Hubbard (recorded at Hubbert), aged 57, was working as a waterman in Sydney, from Harrington Street, The Rocks and was employing a labourer. Also in the household was listed Hannah Whitlock “wife of William Hubbard”, Harrington St, Sydney and her nine year old son William, and William & Mary’s (Goulding) daughter Elizabeth Crooke (28) and her three small children. William died 18th May 1843, aged 76, in the Sydney Benevolent Asylum and was buried 22 May 1843 in the Sandhill Cemetery. Children of William and Mary were ; 1.
