Grayeme's notes ( with the majority of his information courtesy of Cheyne Wright): "Johann Heinrich Ferdinand Peime, born 16th March 1842 in Germany. The actual birthplace is unknown to me at this stage, but, Hamburg is very likely the place. Information on SAG Reel 30 indicates his father was Johann Augustus Peime, a Doctor, but on Johann’s own Death Certificate, his father is listed as Ferdinand, this information supplied by his son Ferdinand Ernest Barton Peime. I have found no conclusive evidence of how Johann arrived in Australia. There is a possibility, it was in March of 1864 aboard a ship named “Washing Wave” or “Dashing Wave/ Hare”, but, according to Cheyne, the handwriting on this document is very difficult to read. Follow-up research on vessels of these names has proved fruitless and to makes things a little more difficult the Records of Marines and Seamen arriving on ships in Australian Ports for the years 1864 and 1865 are missing or lost. Family folklore from a couple of different sources says that Johann travelled the world as a seaman for a few years and finally jumped ship in Sydney. However, he appears to have made no attempt to cover his identity at the time of his marriage – so I believe he probably stayed here quite legitimately. Further evidence of his arrival in 1864 is that on his Naturalization Papers in 1877 he stated he had been in the Colony for 13 years. Johann became an Naturalized Australian on 28th November 1877 so he could “enjoy the privileges of a natural born subject”. At the time he gave his residence as Stoney Creek near Bathurst (the previous name for Gemalla). I have little information on this part of Johann and Mary Ann’s life. I assume that at some time between 1870 and 1877 they moved from Hartley to Gemalla about 30 kilometres west, and Johann commenced to accumulate his land and farm the family property known as “Hillcrest”. By 1885 he had acquired 3 blocks totalling 150 acres, and by 1902 this had grown to 5 blocks for a total of 340 acres. This was the total land acquired and would remain in the family for the next 100 years". Johann's marriage to Mary Ann is reg. at Penrith # 3025/1865 Peimes, John Henry to Harrison, Mary A. His marriage to Maria is reg. at Bathurst & has two reg.# 3060/1881 Peine, Johann H T to Barton, Mariah & 3065/1881 Peine, Johann H Ferdinand to Barton, Maria. More of Grayeme's notes : On 25th June 1881, Johann H F Peime married Maria N Barton at All Saints Cathedral in Bathurst, NSW. Johann and Maria raised a family of nine children at their property at Gemalla, NSW, and it is here that they remained for the rest of their lives. The farm is situated at Gemalla on the road between Tarana (pronounced Tara-na) and Locksley. The property is about 10 kilometres west of Tarana. The children of Johann and Maria are :- 1. William Henry Charles Peime born 1878 William married Sarah Annie Jones in 1917 at Oberon, NSW. William died at Portland, NSW 22nd September 1956. 2. Mabel Augusta Peime born 1882 at Stoney Creek (Gemalla) NSW. Married in 1903 at O’Connell NSW to Herbert Walter Bone. Mabel died in Casino, NSW on 2nd April 1970. Herbert Walter died in Casino, NSW on 13th May 1971. 3. Franci Ata Peime born 10th June 1884 at Stoney Creek, NSW. Franci married Leslie Thomas Smith at Oberon in 1918. 4. Ferdinand Ernest Barton Peime born 17th September 1886 at Fish River (Gemalla). Ferdinand married Eliza Alice Rutter 10th September 1913 at St Mathews Church, Windsor, NSW. He died 30th November 1953 at Bathurst and is buried at Mutton Falls Cemetery. 5. Sarah Alma Peime born 1888 East Macquarie (Gemalla) NSW. Sarah married Burton Hickey at Oberon in 1914 and died 20th Jan 1927 at Glebe, NSW. 6. Bertie Robert Claude Peime born 1891 at Bathurst NSW. He married Elizabeth Malone at Bathurst in 1912 and died 6th January 1950. 7. Allan Victor Hyacinth Peime born 1894 Gemalla. Allan died 13th June 1903 aged 9 years and is buried at Mutton Falls Cemetery. 8. Leila H Peime born 1897 at Gemalla & married Harry Bennett in 1917 at Oberon. 9. Clifford Edward Peime born 1900 at Gemalla died accidently on 11th March 1913 and is buried Mutton Falls Cemetery. Johann Heinrich Ferdinand Peime passed away on 27th August 1918 at Bathurst and is buried in the Mutton Falls Cemetery. He was 76 years of age. Maria continued to run the property with the help of Ferdinand and his family until she passed away at Bathurst District Hospital on 5th April 1941. Maria was laid to rest at Mutton Falls Cemetery. Following the death of Ferdinand in 1953, the property continued to be run by the members of his family, and in particular, Roy David and Dulcie Eunice, who lived almost their entire lives on the property. The youngest child Elsie Olive (Biddy) was seriously handicapped with Downes Syndrome and Dulcie devoted her life to caring for her. Roy and Dulcie never married, and following Roy’s death in 1971, Dulcie continued to run the property and care for Biddy with the help of nephews and nieces. In the early 1990’s ill health struck Dulcie, and Biddy had to be placed in care in Bathurst where she remained until her death in 1995. A few years later, Dulcie’s health forced her to leave the farm and move into Bathurst. The farm was maintained by family members during this time. On 25th February 2002, Dulcie passed away in Bathurst and was laid to rest with her beloved Biddy and the rest of her family in the Mutton Falls Cemetery. In 2003, more than 120 years of Peime occupation ended, when the property was sold to wind up the estate. NB.
