Richard, aged 17 was indicted at the Cheshire Quarter Sessions on 14th October 1817 together with Michael Green and Thomas Clough. They were found guilty of the larceny of a plough beam valued at threepence, belonging to Samuel Barber. These thre e had previously been found not guilty of stealing four cast iron moulds, two cast iron furnace mouths, 100lbs. of cast iron and 100lbs. of wrought iron a total value of 8 pence, the property of Sir John Thomas Stanley, Samuel Dodge, Jonathon Stac khouse and William Horne. Richard was sentenced to seven years transportation but remained on a hulk on the Thames for almost six months before sailing on the "Isabella", a fairly newly built ship of 579 tons, on the 3rd April 1818. The vessels master was Robert Berry an d the voyage lasted 164 days. It carried 230 convicts of which only 3 died during the trip. The "Isabella" arrived in Port Jackson on 14th September 1818. Richard Ellem formed an association with Charlotte Neal (nee Huxley) around 1826, who lived with him as his housekeeper. They eventually married on 3rd October 1842 after the birth of their 8th child. They had 10 children in total. Richard Ellem died 14th November 1857 and is buried in the Upper Mangrove Creek Cemetery. |
