![]() Note |
Charlotte was born c 1802 in the colony to parents Thomas Huxley, "Salamander" 1791 and Ann Forbes, "Prince of Wales" FF 1788. She married James Neal on 5th July 1819 at St Matthews C of E at Windsor, by Rev Cartwright. They both gave their address es as Portland Head. The witnesses were Roger & Elizabeth Connor and Joseph Harpur. Charlotte then formed an association with Francis De Silver, a boatman. The 1822 Muster shows Francis de Silvey came free aboard the "Spring" - a labourer at Windsor. On 10th January 1824, 2 children, Jane born 12th April 1820 and Francis born 19th May 1822 were baptized at St Matthews C of E at Windsor, with Francis De Silver and Charlotte Huxley being named as parents. I believe that James Neal is the father of Jane, her birthdate being nine months after the marriage of Charlotte to James Neal. Sometime between the conception of Jane in July 1819 and that of Francis jnr. in August 1821, Charlotte & James Neal(e) separated and Charlotte had taken up with Francis De Silver snr. The baptisms of Jane and Francis jnr. by the same name - De Silver, would have been a matter of pride or convenience. Another child, Charlotte, was born on 26th June 1824 and baptized 23rd April 1826 with the parents recorded as Francis & Charlotte De Silver. By May 1826, Charlotte had formed yet another relationship, this time with Richard Ellem, their first child George being born 4th February 1827. Charlotte was recorded in the 1828 census, under the name of "Oxley" as housekeeper to Richard Ellem. Her children, all recorded as "Oxley" were, Jane 8, Francis 6, and George 2. Francis jnr. was also recorded at the home of his grandparents Thomas & Ann Huxley (Forbes), as Francis de Silvia. As there is no mention found of "young" Charlotte, it is assumed that she had died as an infant before the 1828 census. Charlotte and Richard Ellem went on to have a total of 10 children, 8 of whom were born before they finally married 3rd October 1842 in the District of Brisbane Water by the Rev Edward Rogers. Witnesses were William D. & Jane White of Mangrove Creek. Charlotte died on 30th November 1885 at Great Marlow and is buried at Grafton Cemetery. Charlottes children were : To James Neal ; 1.
