Sarah & Joseph Crafts marriage reg : V18101003 3A/1810 & V1810108 5/1810 Croft, Joseph to Robinson, Sarah.
Joseph Craft was tried at Middlesex in 1790 and transported for Life via the "Albemarle", a ship built in France weighing 530 tons, sailing from Portsmouth on 27th March 1791. The "Albermarle" was one of 11 ships making up the Third Fleet carrying around 2000 convicts and supplies for the colony at Port Jackson. The Ships Master was George Brown. The journey took 200 days. Of the 282 male convicts who embarked on the "Albemarle", 250 arrived at Port Jackson on 13th October 1791 there being 32 deaths reported, two of which were executions. Mysteriously, there were 6 female convicts also onboard on arrival. A newspaper reported of the whole fleet, 194 male and 4 female convicts died on the voyage and that though conditions werent as "diabolical" as the previous year (2nd Fleet), they were still outrageous.
Joseph Craft married Sarah Robinson on 24th April 1810 in St Phillips C of E Sydney.
He died on 13th June 1839 at Mangrove and is buried at Wisemans Ferry (Laughtondale Cemetery).
The inscription on his headstone reads;
Sacred to the Memory of Joseph Craft snr
Who departed this life June the 13, 1839 aged 74 years
stop traveller see here i lie
as you are now so once was I
as I am now so must you be
therefore prepare to follow me.
