Matthew's marriage has two reg. #'s V1791125 3A/1791 Everingham, Matthew J to Rhymes, Elizabeth and V179115 147A/1791 Everingham, Matthew to Rymes, Elizabeth. He drowned in the Hawkesbury River on Christmas Day of 1817. His death is reg. # V18173920 2B/1817 Everingham, Matthew - Age 48. Born c 1769, Matthew James Everingham was tried by the London Jury before Mr Rose at Justice Hall in the Old Bailey at the Summer Sessions which began on Wednesday, 7th July 1784. He was indicted, “for that he being a profligate person, on the 17th of June did falsely pretend to Owen Owens servant to Samuel Shepherd, Esq; in the Middle Temple, that he was sent to Mr Shepherd, from Mr Clermonts for Burn’s Justice or Compton’s Practice meaning certain books, by which he obtained the same books, value 10s. the property of the said Samuel Shepherd, whereas he was not sent with that message”. He was originally given the outdated term of 7 years transportation to America, even though by 1784, the War of American Independence had ended and convicts were no longer being sent there. Matthew had probably been living and working in the Temple area of London, for a year or so before his trial. After the trial he was returned to Newgate prison where he stayed until September 1784, when he was transferred to another prison, most likely one of the hulks in the Thames. He spent roughly 3 years on the hulks from the age of 15 to 18 years, before he was taken in wagons to Portsmouth. The First Fleet, numbering 11 vessels, set sail on Sunday 13th May 1787. Matthew James Everingham was one of the 208 male convicts who boarded the “Scarborough”, a 420 ton privately owned merchant ship for its journey to the new penal settlement of Botany Bay. They arrived in Port Jackson on 26th January 1788. Matthew James Everingham married Elizabeth Rhymes on 13.3.1791, at Rose Hill (registered in St John’s C of E). Report at the present juncture confines their ravages and barbarity to Portland Head, where Mr Matthew Everingham, settler, his wife and a servant, are said to have been speared; as is also Mr John Howe, settler, near the above spot. The house and out-houses of the former were plundered and afterwards set on fire, but the spear wounds received are not accompanied with any mortal appearance. Several other settlers in this neighbourhood have suffered very considerably in being robbed of their clothing, stock and grain. On Thursday evening, shortly after the accounts arrived, His Excellency dispatched a file of Troopers to the Magistrature at Hawkesbury, with instructions promptly to adopt such measures as the exigency of the case required. The settlers and constables of that settlement went to the succour of the other settlers at Portland Head; as no provocation appears to have been given the Natives in that quarter, and as the Natives in the other districts are still on the domesticated footing they have been for last two years, it is hoped the exertions that are making to keep them in that state, will have the desired effect, without proceeding to further extremities. |
