Elizabeth's marriage to Matthew has two reg. #'s V1791125 3A/1791 Everingham, Matthew J to Rhymes, Elizabeth and V179115 147A/1791 Everingham, Matthew to Rymes, Elizabeth. The marriage was registered at St John's C of E at Parramatta. Her marriage to Patrick also has two reg. #'s V18274114 3B/1827 McGahay, Patrick to Everingham, Elizabeth and V1827218 11/1827 McGahy, Patrick to Everingham, Elizabeth. This marriage was registered at C of E Wilberforce. Her death is reg. # V184147 108/1841 McGahy, Elizabeth - Age 68. Born c1774, Elizabeth Rhymes was tried before Mr Justice Heath, at the Old Bailey in London on 28th October 1789, along with John Moore, “for stealing, on the 11th of September last, one woollen blanket, value 3 s. and one linen sheet, value 4s.the property of Richard Williams, in a lodging room. Mary Williams sworn : I am wife of Richard Williams; I let a ready furnished lodging to the women prisoner; a room on the first floor; Moore was not with her; he came the same night; he paid three shillings a week; they were there rather better than three weeks; I took them to be man and wife; but I since find they are not; the room joining their room, was stripped: I made a great outcry, and sent for an officer: I missed a bed-gown, a sheet, and a blanket: the duplicates were found in the women’s pocket; I saw them taken out by the officer. Mary Jolly sworn : I know both the prisoners very well, by seeing them at our shop; a blanket and a sheet were pledged at our house; I did not take them in; I do not know who bought them in. John Ellingham sworn : I am a carpenter; I went to apprehend the prisoners, by information; I took the prisoners the 12th of September, at No.5 Rose-lane, Spitalfields; I searched her, and found eleven duplicates on her; and two of which led to the discovery, one of a blanket and the other one a sheet. Thomas Huckwell sworn : I am a constable; on the 12th of September, I took the women, and found on her these duplicates. Mrs Jolly : These are our duplicates; my master’s name is printed upon them. John Lodwich sworn : I went with the constable to find out the prisoners; the women was at home; she said to Mrs Williams, you need not turn down the bed, there is a blanket missing and a sheet; she said they were pawned; and I saw eleven duplicates taken out of her pocket. Prisoner Rymes’s defence : I proposed to get the things out; I did not mean to let the things lay in. Prisoner Moore’s defence : I went out about eleven in the forenoon, with intent to get some work; I had been out of work for a long time; I went and got a job; and with the money, I had intention to get out the sheet and blanket, and pay the rent, which was not due for fifteen hours. How come she to pass as your wife? – She is not so by law, Sir, but we cohabit together.” John Moore was found Not Guilty, whilst Elizabeth Rymes was found Guilty and transported for seven years. The Neptune, one of the ships of The Second Fleet, sailed from Portsmouth on 19th January 1790 bound for Port Jackson, arriving there on 28th June 1790. On board was Elizabeth Rymes. Of the 511 convicts who left England on the Neptune, 158 died during the voyage. The ships captain was Donald Trail. Conditions on board the ships of The Second Fleet were atrocious, private contractors had been responsible for their care. Of the 1038 people who left England, 278 died during the voyage and 486 landed in a sick condition. Elizabeth Rhymes (Rymes) married Matthew James Everingham on 13.3.1791 at Rose Hill ( Registered in St John’s C of E). Matthew drowned in the Hawkesbury on 25th December 1817 and is buried at Wilberforce. Elizabeth Rhymes married for a second time, at the age of 53 to 25 year old Patrick McGahy on 20th August 1827 , at Wilberforce. Patrick McGahy had arrived as a convict on the Sir Godfrey Webster from Cork, Ireland on 3rd January 1826. They had nochildren. Elizabeth died in December 1841 and is buried at the private Everingham Cemetery at Knight’s Retreat at Portland Head (Sackville). It is not known what happened to Patrick McGahy Matthew & Elizabeth’s children were ; 1. Mary Everingham b. 23.12.1791 The Ponds (at Rydalmere). She died 24th Jauary 1792 at The Ponds and is most likely buried in St John’s cemetery at Parramatta. 2. Sarah Elizabeth Everingham b.9.6.1793 The Ponds, m. 17.12.1810 to Richard Woodbury. She died 29.3.1874 at Mangrove and is buried at Laughtondale (Wisemans Ferry) Cemetery. 3. Matthew James Everingham 2nd b. 23.5.1795 The Ponds, m1.17.2.1817 to Ann Chaseling, m2. 1865 to Isabella Cotton (nee Haradine – previously Christy & Bowen). He died 22.11.1884 at Sackville and is buried at Knight’s Retreat at Sackville . 4. William Everingham b.8.8.1797 The Ponds, m1. 22.8.1820 to Jane Chaseling, m2. 13.5.1850 to Frances Napthali (nee Dunne. After William’s death, she married Roger Cane in 1862). He died 6.9.1859 at Pitt Town Bottoms and is buried at St Thomas’ Sackville. 5. George Everingham b.9.12.1799 The Ponds, m. 17.8.1821 to Keturah Stubbs. He died 15.4.1881 at Moleville (nr Grafton) and is buried at Ulmarra Cemetery. 6. Ann Everingham b.7.11.1802 Hawkesbury, m.6.7.1818 to John Chaseling, ( John Chaseling m2. to Sarah Mary Woods nee Stubbs). She died 19.3.1849 and is buried at Knight’s Retreat at Sackville. 7. Elizabeth Everingham b.10.6.1805 Sackville, m1. 24.6.1822 to Charles Butler, m2. 4.5.1827 to John Harman, m3. 29.8.1837 to Joseph Ladd, m4. to George Bowd. She died 18.9.1879 at Sackville Reach, buried Weslyan (St Thomas’ Sackville ?) 8. James Everingham b.25.11.1807 Lower Portland Head, m1. 2.3.1833 to Cologne Goddard, m2. 27.10.1859 to Lavinia Maria Musgrove. He died 25.7.1895 at Leichhardt and is buried at Rookwood Cemetery. 9. Maria Everingham b.6.8.1811 Lower Portland Head, m.1.1.1827 to James Cotton. ( James Cotton m2. to Isabella Christy nee Haradine). She died 24.2.1835 at Sackville Reach and is probably buried at St Thomas’ Sackville. 10. John Everingham b.21.5.1815 Lower Portland Head. Although he never married it is thought that he had a child to Mildred Saunders. He died 29.5.1875 at Windsor. |
