The year is 1826 and we see the arrival in Sydney of the Convict ship “England”. Aboard this ship is convict Robert Barton who was born c1810 in London, England. ["England" departed Downs 6th May 1826, arrived Sydney 18th September 1826 - Ships Master was Jn Reay - convicts onboard] For Robert Barton, I have a partial copy of the passenger list for the "England" which indicates the following. Robert could read and write, was protestant, single, a native of London and was a Music Printer by trade. He was tried at London and convicted on 7 April 1826 and sentenced to Life. His crime was he had Picked a Pocket. He was 4'11" tall of ruddy and freckled complexion with dark brown hair and dark hazel eyes. He had a scar over his left eyebrow and large pock marks on the inside of his left knee. I have no knowledge of his convict life in Australia until the issue of his first Ticket of Leave in 1834 at Bathurst. Last name: Barton First name: Robert Ship: England Year: 1826 Native place: London Trade or calling: Printer District: Bathurst Ticket no.: 34/1226 Ticket no.: 34/1226 State Records shelf ref: 4/4419 State Records reel no: 2688 A new Ticket of Leave was issued to him at Bathurst in 1838 and another from Parramatta in 1840. [On the Index to Tickets of Leave 1810-75 on the SAG website http://svc007.bne009i.server-web.com/catalogue/onlinebook/gatewayrecnsw.ehtml there are 3 Robert Bartons listed (all the same person). Ship - England, Arrived - 1826, Native Place - London, Trade/Calling - Printer. The first ticket of leave was issued in District of Bathurst 1834 - no 34/1226, shelf ref 4/4419, reel no 2688. 2nd issued District of Bathurst 1838 - no 38/48, shelf ref 4/4116, reel no 928. 3rd issued District of Parramatta 1840 - no 40/555, shelf ref 4/4137, reel no 935.] It appears he was unassigned by 1834 and making a life for himself in the Bathurst district. At some time around 1838, Robert formed a relationship with a convict women named Jemima Chapman who had been transported on the “Pyramus” in 1832. Jemima received her Ticket of Leave at Parramatta also in 1840. Robert Barton married Jemima Chapman on 11th July 1843 in the Bathurst district. The marriage bore three children. 1. Harriet Barton born 1839. 2. George Thomas Barton born 13th July 1841 at Fish River near Bathurst, NSW. 3. Louisa Barton born 15th August 1843 at Fish River near Bathurst, NSW Jemima died on 13th December 1845 at the age of 32 years and was buried in Bathurst. On 17th October 1848, Robert Barton married Sarah Lofty who was just short of her 17th birthday. The marriage took place at Kelso, NSW. The area in which they lived is referred to as Fish River near Bathurst, but in fact this is also at Gemalla and the Barton farm was located on the Fish River directly opposite the Peime farm. This marriage produced eight children :- 1. Robert Barton born 1849, married in 1872 to Elizabeth Ann Pearce and died in 1937 at O’Connell Plains, NSW 2. Jane Barton born 19th July 1851 at Fish River, NSW. Jane married on 15th March 1870 at All Saints Bathurst to William James Hutchison. She died on 4th December 1924 at Bathurst. 3.
