John James Bone was born 20th August 1838 at Stonegate Street, Kings Lynn - County of Norfolk (Eng) to Robert Coston Bone and Ellice Bone formerly Hudson. Fathers occupation was sailor whose residence was Stonegate Street, Kings Lynn. ********************************************************* Grayeme's notes ....... This is what I know of the Bones. For a start I will say that in reality the Bone family we come from is a very small family and are not related to any other Bone families in Australia. To explain this, John James Bone only had one brother Robert, and he lived and died in Kingslynn, Norfolk, England without having any sons. Of John James and Carolines family, only 2 boys survived, that being Herbert Walter and Ernest Albert. Ernest Albert walked out of the home at Pipers Flat soon after his father died and was never heard of again by the family. Sadly, until the day he died, Grandpa Herbert Walter kept looking for his brother, but died not knowing of his whereabouts. From my research over the years I have found that Ernest Albert married Clara Monaghan at Petersham in Sydney in 1902. However there were no children, and Clara died at Drummoyne in Sydney in 1934. What happened to Ernest after this I do not know for sure, but he was living as a hermit, with his camp at a camping ground on the outskirts of Port Macquarie for some years before he was found dead in the camp in 1954. A local family had befriended him and used to take him food and keep an eye on him, and it was they who found him dead. So that only leaves Herbert Walter to keep the Bone name going, so any Bones today that belong to our family in Australia, can only descend from either Victor, Ernest or Horace. Apart from those from the girls that carry different surnames, they are still part of the family (better clarify that). 00000000000 Robert Costin Bone was a fisherman in Kingslynn, Norfolk. England. and as far as I can find had nothing to do with any shipping company. There were many fisherman in the area and they all had small rowboats that went out into the bay to fish. It was a large industry there and many of the people worked as fisherman. They had a hard and simple life with very little opportunity to do any better for themselves. Robert Costin Bone married Alice Hudson. They only had 2 children, John James and Robert. John James Bone become a seaman, but I don’t know at what age. I do know he was a seaman on a ship to America in 1861. He also made a trip to Australia in 1862 aboard the “Tiptree” as a seaman. This was 1 year before he married Caroline. I suspect, that he may have met Caroline during this stay in Sydney, as she was living and working with a family near the wharves. But this is only my guess. He returned to Australia again in 1863 aboard the “Tiptree” and this time, he left the ship and married Caroline. They were actually married the day before the “Tiptree” actually anchored at Port. So I believe he left the boat as soon as it came into the harbour, and went to Caroline who was waiting for his return, and they were married the same day. John became a Railway worker in Sydney for a while before going to Berrima and from there to the Lithgow area. They were living at Hartley for a while, where some of the early children were born, then moved to Pipers Flat (a railway siding near Lithgow) were they remained until his death. Wallerawang is only a few miles from Pipers Flat, but I have not found anything to suggest they actually lived there. I think the children were registered at the closest or most convenient place of registration at the time. Hartley was the early registration centre for the area. Then Wallerawang and later Lithgow. John worked as a Guard on the railway, mostly working the line from Pipers Flat to Mudgee and Gulgong for many years. At the age of 56 he was working the Mudgee Mail train from Lithgow to Mudgee when he suffered a heart attack and died on the train shortly before arriving at Mudgee. He affectivly worked the train up as the guard, and came back the next day in a coffin on the same train for burial at Pipers Flat. After John's death, Caroline was left with the home and 300 pounds railway insurance, so she turned the home into a boarding house, One of the boarders was Edwin Bickmore who later married Emily and went to live in Kurri Kurri. Caroline and the youngest daughter Vera kept the boarding house going as long as they could, before selling up and moving up to live with Emily at Kurri Kurri. Caroline died in Kurri Kurri and was taken back to Pipers Flat for burial in the family plot. They were a very tragic family with more than half their children dying. Alice was born in Sydney and died in Berrima at the age of 2 yrs Sarah was born in Berrima, married Fred Pearson and died at Pipers Flat but I have not been able to find any connections into this family. Robert Christian was born and died infant at Hartley. Violet was born and died infant at Hartley. Edith was born at Hartley and was a chronic asthmatic and lived to 20 before dying at Pipers Flat. Ernest Albert I covered above. Herbert Walter is ours, and like his father was a railway man. He started as a junior porter at Rydell. He married Mabel Peime and they were stationed at Chatswood in Sydney for a while where their first child Victor was born. Herbert then was moved to Mullumbimby as Station Master where the rest of the family were born. Around 1930, Herbert left the Railway and went banana farming at Mullumbimby, this was not very successful however, and they then moved to Bruton near Casino where they were share farmers on a dairy farm. When they retired from this, they moved into Casino where they remained until firstly Mabel died and Herbert followed shortly after. Emily May married Edwin Bickmore, she lived at Kurri Kurri and died very young, but I have no contact with any of her family. Vera Gladys married Jim Coates and lived all her married life at Maroubra in Sydney. I visited her many times as a young fella in Sydney but again I have no contact with any of her family. GB |
