George Hudson, a bachelor, married Ann Jane Benbrook, a spinster, at Holy Trinity Church (C of E), Sydney on the 19th January 1875. The Minister was Edward Rogers and the witnesses were Thomas Thompson, Elizabeth Thompson and Louisa Leistikow . George’s marriage certificate details are ;................Death certificate in 1907 details are ; Name ; George Hudson.........................................George Austin Hudson Place of Birth ; Birmingham, England.......................Banbury, England Occupation ; Farmer..............................................Old Age Pensioner, Farmer Age ; Full.............................................................65 years Usual Residence ; Grafton, Clarence River NSW........Orara River, District of Grafton NSW Father ; George Hudson........................................Austin Hudson Occupation ; Engineer...........................................Soldier Mother ; Sarah Beer.............................................Sarah Berry The death certificate notes he was 32 years of age at his marriage, which would give him a birth year of circa 1843. It also states he had lived in NSW for 33 years (arrived in Australia circa 1874) and in New Zealand for 9 years ( arrived NZ circa 1865 at the age of about 22 years). Efforts to find his arrival into NSW and New Zealand have proved fruitless. It is interesting to note that he arrived here in 1874, and was already residing in Grafton, on the North Coast of NSW when he returned (?) to Sydney to marry Ann Jane Benbrook in January of 1875. George Hudson died on 22.6.1907 at Orara River District of Grafton and is buried in the C of E section of the Bent St Cemetery, South Grafton. ******************************************* I have still to work out, actually where Greatgrandfather George & Granny Hudson lived at various stages of their lives. Mum would say Sherwood Creek. Sherwood Creek, to me, refers to the valley more or less directly over the mountains to the east of Glenreagh ie the top end of Sherwood Creek. But I think she was referring to the area around Kungala.......From memory Kungala Railway Station was originally called Sherwood Station, but renamed due to the confusion with a Sherwood Creek/Station down near Kempsey ?? http://parishmaps.lands.nsw.gov.au:80/pmap.html Parish ; Sherwood County ; Fitzroy Shows various maps with George owning CP (Conditional Purchase) CL (?? Conditional Lease) will have to learn more about maps) ************ HCC&ND Vol 1 - pg 153 - describing Gillett family land ..... "1875 Edward Gillett ...had taken up the first block of land numbered Portion 1 in the Parish of Kremnos, County of Fitzroy, Land District of Grafton ...the property known as 'Clifton' came into being. and remained in the family until sold about 1970...... Will Kelly lived across the creek from 'Clifton'. This property was sold to Mr Hudson and then to Mr Will. Ellem, who in turn sold to Mr Frank Martin. The land selected by Edward Gillett was the fertile valley at the confluence of Middle Creek and Sandy Creek." NOW from 'Ellem Tree & Branches' pg 78 Francis William Ellem known as Bill ..... "He took up farming at Ulmarra ..the big floods of the 1890's ..he sought less flood prone land at Middle Creek, 18 miles from Grafton. Here he lived for 29 years. He retired from farming to Mary St Grafton in 1922" Which would have Bill Ellem purchasing the land from George Hudson c1893. ************************************** George's death notice in 1907 says he ....... - 'resided four miles at the rear of South Grafton' ....which is the "rear" and for that matter the "front" of South Grafton !! - 'many years ago he was a resident of Waterview, above South Grafton' - 'and subsequently went to live at Kangaroo Creek' ****************************************** 1884 Return of Stock and Stock holders: Grafton district pge 168 (1885 Journal of the N.S.W. Legislative Council 1885 - 482 pages) George Austin HUDSON - 96 acres 10 horses 10 Cattle 20 pigs Coutts Crossing, South Grafton. |
