Ann Jane Benbrook, a spinster, married George Hudson, a bachelor, at Holy Trinity Church (C of E), Sydney on the 19th January 1875. The Minister was Edward Rogers and the witnesses were Thomas Thompson, Elizabeth Thompson and Louisa Leistikow. The details for Ann on their marriage certificate are ; Name ; Ann Jane Benbrook Place of Birth ; Charleston, America. Occupation ; Not stated Age ; Full Usual Residence ; Sydney Father ; William Benbrook Occupation ; Gardener Mother ; Elizabeth King On the BDM index Ann’s death details are 24797/1938 – Anne Jane Hudson – aged 86 years of Grafton – registered at Grafton. This would give her a birth year of circa 1852. She would have been about 23 years of age at her marriage. Efforts to find her arrival into Australia have been the same as George’s. My mother would tell me Granny Hudson’s (Ann Jane Benbrook) parents died on the voyage to Australia and were buried at sea and she was raised by a family named Beer - Beard, then next time the story was told it was Thompson. This story always intrigued me as a child and I guess I asked, and was told, a thousand times. An Aunt would tell the story of when Ann “stepped off the boat in Melbourne, the ground burnt her feet”. Contact by a cousin, Cynthia, with a Benbrook descendant in America who has written a Benbrook family history, tells us ; “I've worked this out and I seriously believe William Benbrook, Jr. was the son of William Benbrook, Sr. and grandson of the Rev. John Benbrook. I need to back you up to 1748 and then bring you forward so you'll understand the scenario. Ezekiel Gould Benbrook, Sr. was born in 1748 in NC. There is a long standing story/rumor that he was born in England and he was an orphan; and that his parents died on the Atlantic crossing during the 1750s. That is where Ann Benbrook-Hudson's got her story about her own parents. I'm sure Ann arrived in Australia with the accompaniment of both her parents. Ezekiel was not born with the middle name Gould but acquired it later in life. He was very closely tied to the Gould Family of southern NC in the late 18th century. His children were most likely baptised and married by the the Rev. Daniel Gould. Ezekiel married Mary Meguiar 15 Nov 1773, Anson Co., NC. They had nine known children. The Rev. John Benbrook was their oldest and he was born 1774-76, Anson Co., NC. He married Lucy Leaton in 1797?, Richmond Co., NC and had 12 children. Their oldest child was William Benbrook, Sr? born in 1798?, Richmond Co., NC. Their 5th child would be named Dr. Daniel Gould Benbrook, (a graduate of Ohio State School of Medicine @ Cincinnati in 1831), another wild character and quite attractiveman. The Benbrook family along with five other families left NC for KY in 1807. It was a long trip of many people, oxen, horses and carts. Some of the men had gone out several months earlier to acquire land there. They located in Warren Co., which proceeded to divide into Allen (1815) Simpson (1819) Counties. In 1817, The Rev. John Benbrook left KY for SC to do business on behalf of Micijah Shelton. He sold some land for him and received "Cape Fear" currency which had a much lower exchange rate in KY. He would later be sued for that judgment. Rev. John had traveled to SC with the accompaniment of his oldest son, William (then about 19). It was on this trip that William met an unknown young woman, Cynthia's 3rd gr grandmother, and conceived this child. William returned to KY with his father and on the 1819 KY tax record the names appear: John Benbrook - 1 voter, 792 acres land, 3 slaves, & 5 horses; William Benbrook (his son) - 1 voter & 1 horse. William then disappears from the KY tax record 'till 1827, while his father remains on the record. The following is what I believed happened. In 1819, William got word from SC that his young companion was with child and he returned to SC in 1820 to marry her. He stayed 'till 1826 before returning alone. I think William Benbrook, Sr. quit on this marriage. His tax record for KY reads: 1827, 1 voter, no taxable possessions; 1829, 1 horse - value $10.00; and 1830, one horse - value $30.00. His son William Jr. (b. 1818) then was raised by his mother and in the helpful accompaniment of the Gould family. William and his wife, Elizabeth King, are residing in the same house with Patrick Gould in 1850, Charleston, SC. William Benbrook, Jr. and his family disappeared after that until catching a clipper for Australia. In those days, Charleston was recognized as a leading sea port in the World. So information about places like Australia often proliferated. The harbor was always filled with all kinds of ships. I seriously doubt that Ann's parents died at sea as that same worn out fabricated story was over 100 years old and just never went away. So we need to find the missing spouse of William Sr. (b. 1798 - your 3rd gr grandmother). The Rev. John Benbrook and Lucy Leaton were your 4th great grandparents and Ezekiel Gould Benbrook, Sr. and Mary Meguiar were your 5th great grandparents (my 5th) and that makes us 6th cousins.” I refuse to throw out “our” old story yet, till I’ve shaken it thoroughly and was wondering if MAYBE the Benbrooks arrived into NZ first (not Australia), one parent – William, died (maybe at sea) and Elizabeth married again to a Thompson ?(the witnesses to George & Ann’s marriage were Thomas and ELIZABETH Thompson). George met Ann whilst living in NZ, but came by himself to NSW and settled himself at Grafton. Ann then came over from NZ, they married in Sydney and came back to theClarence /Orara to live happily ever after ??? This is pure conjecture of course. Time will tell. George Hudson died on 22.6.1907 at Orara River District of Grafton and is buried in the C of E section of the Bent St Cemetery, South Grafton. Ann Jane Hudson nee Benbrook died in 1938 and is probably also buried in the same cemetery. She lived her last years in Tyson St, South Grafton. George and Ann’s children were ; 1. Blanche Albertha Hudson born 1876 (registered at Grafton – 12005/1876), m 1893 (registered at Grafton – 3633/1893) to Edwin Green. She died 26.1.1916 (registered at Bellingen ) at Glenreagh where she is buried. 2. Thomas Austen A. Hudson born 1877 (registered at Grafton – 12632/1877), m 1913 (registered at Grafton - 1594/1913) to Flossie I. E. Perrett . He died 1930 (Registered at Coff’s Harbour - 21161/1930) at Bagawah Creek near Glenreagh. 3. Rosa Lee Sarah Jane (Rosalie) Hudson born 22.8.1879 (registered at Grafton – 14311/1879), m. 7.2.1917 in Glenreagh (registered at Bellingen – 1778/1917) to Edwin Green. She died 21.12.1957 and is buried in Bent St Cemetery, South Grafton. 4. Richard William H. Hudson born 1881 (registered at Grafton – 15898/1881) and died 1881 (registered at Grafton – 7158/1881). 5. Alice Elizabeth Hudson born 1882 (registered at Grafton – 16668/1882), m. 4.11.1908 (registered at Grafton – 10886/1908) to Frederick Cecil Edwards. ********************************************************** Courtesy of Lorraine Shuker ...
