For the last couple of years I have known that Grayeme's side had been in "my territory" - Glenreagh, as early if not before "my lot" and we have been searching for where exactly Patrick & Ann Nina (nee Perry) Maguire had been living. In "Glenreagh - A Town of Promise" ( Elizabeth Webb), page 13 - re the application for a provisional school in May 1887 - "John 13, Pat 11, William 9, Fred 7, Florie 5, and Winifred 4, the children of Pat Maguire were two miles distant" from the proposed site which was just over the northern side of Tallawudjah Creek. Under Shipman's in "Glenreagh 1858-1983" it says - "During their first trip from Grafton to Glenreagh, William and Theresa enjoyed their first meal in the district under a beautiful Morton Bay fig tree situated on the side of the road on what was/is known as McGuires Hill". The remains of the Moreton Bay fig are on the bottom side of the road, 100 mtrs from the Orara river, opposite to where stood Glenreagh's first hotel -Gillett's (1896) - about 1 mile north of the proposed school site. In "The History of Coutt's Crossing & Nymboida Districts" book one, page 180 ; From the "Clarence & Richmond Examiner" 13.10.1888 "On Thursday, a young man named Ward [Thomas], about 22 years of age, whose parents reside near the Homebush Hotel, was drowned while trying to cross Tallawudjah Creek near Glenreagh. The body has since been discovered and will be conveyed to South Grafton" and "An inquest held at the Homebush Hotel near South Grafton returned a verdict of accidental drowning while trying to save horses trapped on an island as a result of the river being swollen by heavy rains. At the time of his death evidence disclosed that he was on his way to his parent's home, from Coff's Harbour where he had been engaged at a sugar mill. He was travelling with a friend, John Isaacs and they had camped near P. McGuire's place from Monday to Thursday owing to the wet. The drowning occured at this point." I had Patrick Maguire's land placed immediately to the north of the old pub block but was confused with the drowning report saying Tallawudjah Ck. The junction of the Orara River and Tallawudjah Creek is about halfway from the old school site and the old fig tree (around a bend) and I guess in a flood you would be confused as to what was crossed - creek or river. This week Bessie Webb kindly sent me a report from the Daily Examiner - 23rd Aug 1890 - Free Selections - Patrick Maguire - Glenreagh - Parish Kremnos - County Fitzroy - 59 acres - Portion 21. By doing a search for Kremnos on : http://www.lands.nsw.gov.au/OnlineServices/ParishMaps/default.htm I found his blocks on a map dated 1910 - #10741601, by enlarging the section in the bottom, right hand corner. I also found that my GGranny Ellem (Agnes Craft) as executrix of estate of Samuel Henry Ellem, had purchased two of the blocks from Grayeme's GGGrandfather Patrick Maguire. (is there anything sacred ?) The portions running south to north are : 11 - Agnes Ellem 48 - Agnes Ellem 21 - Patrick Maguire 2 - Patrick Maguire crossed out - Agnes Ellem 18 - Patrick Maguire 19 - Patrick Maguire crossed out - Agnes Ellem 9 - Edward Maguire 8 - Edward Maguire All blocks run from the Orara River to the mountain range with the road running through the bottom portions. From what I can work out, portion 19 is where "Elmswood" - Granny Ellem's house once stood. |
