Daniel Flanagan, a Captain in the British Army had fought in the Peninsula War, and was stationed in the Nova Scotia Garrison when Margaret, his daughter was born. He returned to England and in 1832 was an outpatient at Chelsea Hospital. He arrived in Hobart Town, van Diemen’s Land, on 17.1.1833 aboard the “Clyde” accompanied by his wife, Elizabeth nee Campbell (b. 25.5.1794 to Alexander Campbell & Sarah Nickerson, who married 6.10.1786 Argyle, Yarmouth County, Nova Scotia).
Later in the same year he proceeded to Port Jackson, accompanied by his daughter aboard the “Clementine” arriving on 28.4.1833. Daniel’s occupation was listed as a stonemason, but he did not pursue this profession in Australia. Through the Emigrants Friend Society he was able to obtain a position as second paid constable at Port Macquarie late in 1833 at the princely salary of 2 shillings & 3 pence per diem, a position he held until 28.11.1835. Daniel died on 24.12.1851, aged 63 & is buried in the Church of England Pioneer Historical Cemetery at Port Macquarie and is listed on the Pioneer Monument. The funeral service was conducted by Thomas O’Reilly.
It is not known when Elizabeth died.
Daniel & Elizabeth’s child was ;
1. Margaret Flanagan born ??, m1. 9.5.1835 to John Perry at St Thomas C of E Church at Port Macquarie, m2. 3.12.1866 to William Swindell at Shannon Dale near Kempsey. She died 5.8.1907 at Stewart’s Point.
